Following President Donald Trump’s creation by executive order of an Advisory Commission on Election Integrity, NPR affiliate KJZZ of Phoenix, Ariz., interviewed Lindsay Nielson, a visiting assistant professor of political science at Bucknell who studies voter participation and behavior in U.S. politics and elections.
Nielson said there is very little evidence that systematic voter fraud occurs, but that research, including her own, suggests voter ID laws have an effect lowering voter turnout among low-income and non-white populations.
“There is concern […] that this commission is going to be used as an excuse to push more intensive voting laws that are going to keep those eligible voters from being able to vote in future elections,” Nielson said. “If our discussion of election reform and voting fraud is entirely around these very rare cases of improper and fraudulent voting, that’s going to take away attention from what really needs to change about our election system.”
