New Scientist magazine reported on the findings of a study by Professor Andrea Halpern, psychology, that asked whether our ability to tell when music sounds “off” or “wrong” declines as we get older. Halpern (the paper’s first author) and her co-researchers examined the brain waves of adults ages 33 and younger and 62 and older as they listened to music, and found no difference in the ability of the two groups to predict which notes came next in a short musical sequence, although the older adults used a wider region of their brains to do so.
