Professor Nina Banks, economics, published this op-ed on the historical significance of Sadie Tanner Mossell Alexander becoming the first African American to gain a doctoral degree in economics when she completed her work at the University of Pennsylvania on June 15, 1921. Banks has edited a new book titled Democracy, Race, and Justice: The Speeches and Writings of Sadie T.M. Alexander (Yale University Press), which was released on June 15, the 100th anniversary of Alexander receiving that degree.
