Bucknell economics professor Thomas Kinnaman discusses the origins of recycling in this “Planet Money” episode. Interestingly enough, Kinnaman reports that it began with an Alabama businessman, a mob boss, 3,186 tons of garbage and a ship called “the Mobro.”
